Moby’s Digital Pick for Free Comic Book Day 2014 is…

TJ

TJ2Last year’s pick of Bombshell #1 (Hero Universe Comics) went on to have a successful Kickstarter campaign and generally was a great pick. Like Bombshell, Tomorrow Jones has three issues in the series, and you can get the first one for free right here.

Like before, I chose this book because of it being an independent comic and because it’s a bit of a different take on superheroes. I also wanted to pick something that would be enjoyable for all types of readers as well.

The comic is not new, having had a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012. But still, it’s online and free. And it’s a lot of fun too. Series creator Brian Daniel (@BrianWithCheese) gives us a fun coming of age story involving family and school, all centered on a strong female character. Good stuff. Continue reading »

bishop1Ok, so I was bored and watched the X-Men movie trilogy last night. Well, most of it. Nightcrawler was underused, my 3 predictions for the first movie still hold true, and when I went to find out what the heck was up with Bishop (not in the movies, just curious)…well, I am still clueless.

Look, I have them all, all the X-Men comics from the early 90’s. But I have to admit that with the ‘Age of Apocalypse’ came the age of too many damn crossovers and die-cut crap…so I really have no idea just who the heck Bishop is or what his power was. Heresy you say? Perhaps, but I looked him up on Wikipedia anyway. Dear lord, whatever happened to simple storytelling? Continue reading »

gripsI stated in an earlier post that “If you were not there and did not see it yourself, I imagine it is hard to imagine but for a few years almost anything in B&W and/or a #1 issue would just sell, period.”

Now, it is fair to say that a lot of the art used in many Silverwolf books was not up to par with Marvel or DC Comics, and some would wonder why would anyone buy this stuff. This post tries to mine the information online about Silverwolf to explain why.

The truth is we can all blame the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tim Vigil, and Grips. Continue reading »

DESPJudging by the comic book projects populating Kickstarter, I am starting to see something pretty cool. I could be wrong, but I have hope that the whole Vampire and Zombie obsession is almost over. Seriously, enough already…what the heck is it with zombies anyway?

So, that’s the good news. The interesting thing is what I see replacing them: Steampunk. Yeah, it still falls into that whole emo/goth ‘alternative’ like the zombie stuff; but I’ve about had it with the ubiquitous obsession with all things undead. The Steampunk concepts seem pretty cool too, especially in comparison. They are ‘techie’, a bit sci-fi, and best of all…no frickin’ corpses! Yup, I prefer my entertainment media without the undead walking around…or at least fewer of them than we have had the last few years.

There are a few Steampunk comic projects on Kickstarter right now actually, here’s a quick round up:
