I’ve noticed that in addition to all the superhero movies/comic book ideas that there are also quite a few cartoons to live action films, a la The Chipmunks and Yogi Bear, also in development right now. Some interesting choices, too. Can you say Hong Kong Fuey? Wow. That was the one that caught Moby’s eye. I mean, if their actually going to do a Hong Kong Fuey film, then Moby can think of all kinds of stuff he would like to see made into feature films.
How about these gems just from the Laff-A-Lympics:
Captain CAVEMAN!
C’mon, everyone knows this guy, and he hangs out with three babes. And maybe they could script in their pals Scooby and Shaggy. Eh? Moby figures you just take ‘Cousin It’, give him a club and have him stand next to three lovely ladies…well that sounds at least as good as whatever they were smoking when they green-lit Underdog.
Dick Dastardly and Muttley
He’s a snickering, animated dog with a raging case of schadenfreude that won’t go away no matter how many times he copilots your Bi-Plane…so what’s not to like? Pretty bad when the dog character seems to be in on the joke, thus playing the straight man to a human, airborne version of Wile E. Coyote. Perhaps they could work on some sort of cross-universe thingy with them VS. their counterparts, Dread Baron and Mumbly. Might be quite epic, actually. Or maybe we could just move on to…
Huckleberry Hound
There sure were a lot of characters in the Hanna-Barbera universe that were based on dogs and cats. Sure they had a horse (Quick Draw McGraw), apes (Grape Ape & Magilla Gorilla), and more. But they sure were fans of those doggies. A charming southern chap, Huckleberry was there to make all those kids from the south know that even they could still look up to a cartoon dog as a role model.
Which brings me to a personal favorite, Droopy. Though he’s not from the Laff-A-Lympics, Droopy is still an old-time favorite ’cause he’s just SO HAPPY, like this place. And he’s got the standard dog cartoon character sidekick who also happens to be a puppy thing going on, so we know he is wise and all. His two arch enemies, Spike the bulldog and the Wolf, would translate well to the big screen. But all the same, Hollywood would probably give him some human nemesis to drop dynamite into the pants of…while having a screen presence of a potted fern. Can’t wait I tell ya!
I know I have been a bit mean to those great Hanna-Barbera shows, but that was only intentional. For more info on these guys, check out http://www.hbshows.com, they seem to have a cool site. Check back for more on the coming of the ‘Board Game’ genre about to overrun the multiplex.
