Your cable is out for the weekend, so no cable television and no Netflix or Hulu streaming. All you can get on the TV is the local Fox affiliate, which has some ‘B’ movie that escaped from the Lifetime Network back in the 90’s (and was actually released in theaters) wrapping up…and another will be starting soon.
And then it happens. Underdog. Yup, up next on the only channel you can get is Underdog, but at least the signal is strong.
I’m glad it’s Underdog, actually. I’ve never been able to find time to watch it, and it seems like a good time now, I have little choice. Sure it’s got a great tagline, but it’s going to be ‘Benji Can Fly’, right? I guess Moby was about to find out.
The movie starts well enough, and looks well done to be honest. So far, so good. And then it happens again, another shock. Shoelick, AKA Underdog, is gonna have a freaking story arc! OMG. This is gonna be good I thought…and I was mostly right.
The movie sticks to the superhero-origin manual rather tight, but does it WELL. They tried real hard, you can tell. So, Shoelick ends up in a mad scientist’s laboratory where he is informed by one of his fellow captives that freaky things are about to happen. And he was right, as enter screen right….it’s James Belushi and Patrick Warburton!
Two for one! – Underdog
Decent casting, I like it. Warburton does his best impersonation of Krunk, the character he voiced in The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) . He plays second banana so well, doesn’t he? I imagine Patrick could do a one man show about his experience in Hollywood…he has the voice to hold the audience there for long enough. And you can always do worse than to go with veteran comedy actor James Belushi for a light family comedy.
The initial flying scene was well done, and I think that was when I knew I was gonna like this movie after all. Then he meets the girl, and so on.
Yeah, I use my front paws and drag my but on the ground. Chicks dig that. – Underdog
Things are going good, then they get worse. Then some stuff happens. Yup, stuff. I’m not gonna ruin the movie for you; but it is not bad, and even the villains have a story arc. What I am getting at is, I shall never again fear when Underdog is here…and the cable is not.
I wonder what’s on next?
