the-interview

Comrades! As you might have heard, Sony has pulled The Interview from it’s Christmas release date. Some are calling it a victory for the hackers, and a huge loss for Sony and the freedom of artistic expression. The cost to sony will likely be somewhere around $200 Million, possibly more.

But in all this unpleasantness, a few lucky folks are going to make a little money after all. How you ask? Well, the movie itself cost around $45 Million to make, with at least that much spent on advertising and merchandising. If you happen to have any of that promotional merchandise lying around, you could be making a small killing right now on eBay.

With The Interview becoming the first movie ever pulled due to a cyber attack, collectors are looking for anything officially related to the film. Sure, some just want the poster for their wall, but a lot more are likely looking to put away whatever they can find cheap for a few years in hope of cashing out in the future.

I took a quick look at eBay to be sure, and yeah it’s definitely happening. Posters for newer movies like this usually go for only about $10, sometimes not even that. Right now there are auctions ending for Frozen (under $5) and MockingJay Part 1 ($16), both movies with appeal to younger audiences likely to put a movie poster on their wall. But posters for The Interview on ebay are going from around $40 for smaller sizes to a few hundred dollars for the full size, double sided posters. I picked up a poster for The Interview from a local theater for only $1, but this was before the movie was cancelled.

I have no real clue what is out there, but I have seen the drinking cups, and surely there are buttons and pins. Whatever there is, I’m willing to bet fakes will start making the rounds soon. Wanna bet?.

Perhaps Sony should join the fun and start posting lots of promotional crap on eBay. Maybe that way they could at least recoup a couple million dollars. Eh, comrades! Eh!
